A Small Pithos in Aged Terracotta

The terracotta Pithos pot is a hand-built vessel from Plantatorem's Tuscan Sun collection, finished to look like something carried out of an old olive grove.

The Shape Comes From Ancient Greece

A pithos was the storage jar of the ancient Mediterranean, used for oil, grain, and wine. This piece keeps the outline: wide belly, a shoulder pulling in sharply, a thick flared collar at the mouth. As a Greek terracotta pot it earns the name through form, not decoration.

Whitewashed Finish, Visible Handwork

The surface reads chalky and pale, closer to old lime wash than raw clay, with pink-orange terracotta breaking through at the rim and wherever the finish wore thin. Tool scars, a mouth slightly out of round, shallow gouges in the wall. That is what a handmade terracotta pot looks like when nobody sands away the evidence, and at three feet it passes for an antique terracotta planter.

Sold in Cases of Four

Each pot measures 5.0" x 7.0" and ships four to a case in an aged color assortment, so no two arrive alike. Four clustered on a step read better than one alone, and every handcrafted clay planter in the case carries its own wear. Among small terracotta garden pots this is one to buy in multiples.

Where to Use It

Dried stems suit it best: eucalyptus, ruscus, dried amaranth, bare branches in fall. As a Mediterranean Terracotta Planter it sits well on a stucco ledge or weathered wood, and empty it works as a decorative Greek planter on a mantel or bathroom shelf. Outdoors, treat it as an outdoor terracotta planter for covered spots: a porch rail, a shaded entry, a table under a pergola. For live plants, one haworthia or a 4 inch nursery pot dropped in. For a large terracotta pot in the same aged spirit see the Ancient Amphora Large Planter, and Greek terracotta planters covers other classical shapes.

Care and Cold Weather

Plantatorem builds this collection as a frost-proof terracotta planter line, but a vessel this small holds too little soil to shrug off a hard freeze wet. Empty it and bring it in once nights drop below freezing.

Claire T. ★★★★★

It arrived looking like it had just been dug up from an old vineyard, and the aged terracotta finish has a rough, authentic texture that modern pots just can't match. I use it for a small olive tree on my balcony, and it already feels like it's been there for decades.

Victoria ★★★★★

I set it on my patio next to a big fern and the aged terracotta makes it look like it's been there for decades. The hand-built shape gives it an organic feel that perfectly matches the Tuscan Sun collection description.

Penelope ★★★★★

The weathered terracotta finish looks exactly like it was dug up from an old grove — it adds instant character to my patio. Even though it’s the small size, it feels substantial and solid when you pick it up.
